When promoting your company locally it becomes increasingly more achievable to get to that highly- sought after front page. When you are on the front-page of the search engines your business is more likely to be seen by consumers looking for what you have and giving you more of a chance to make the sell. There are several factors that will help propel you to the front page and we will talk about them briefly.
Keyword research is at the heart of good seo. This is probably the most essential element of the SEO processes and crucial. You must find the right keywords that consumers are using to browse the net to find your product or service. However, these keywords are not going to just jump off the page into your content, you have to do some research to find them. In order to find them you will have to do a little research, usually called keyword research.
When performing keyword research it is important to remember that not all keywords are equal. A keyword is a term used to retrieve documents in an information system such as a catalog or a search engine. There are literally billions of search words and phrases that are available for people to look upon and gain information.
The term 'long tail' was is used to describe the strategy of targeting less-competitive niche markets rather than the hugely competitive broad keywords. A long tail keyword is something like "Macon Internet Marketing Specialist" while a short wail keyword is something like "Internet Marketing". Long tail keywords are said to be more of direct keyword because if a searcher is going to go thru all the trouble to type in exactly what they are wanting to find chances are they will make a purchase.

A Brief Desciption and Basics of SEO
There are a lot of things in the computer world that people tend to find mysterious and they see as touching upon black magic. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is one of those things that ranks way up there on the mystery and black magic scale. Today, the term has expanded to Search Engine Marketing which includes paid advertising and other online marketing activities but for our purposes we'll stick with SEO.
SEO is the practice of promoting a web site by increasing its position in search results on the major search engines. Those search engines comprise of Google mainly but also include Yahoo!, Bing, and a few others. The idea is to make the site appear higher in the list of search results than similar sites. This is referred to as "organic" SEO meaning that the rank came as a result of plain old search results rather than having to pay for placement on the search engine.
There's a lot of value in getting it right as far as SEO goes. First of all it's free and second of all, web searches are becoming the primary means of finding information. Primary among the search engines is Google and according to some market research, Google commanded an incredible 81.22% of the global market share in June 2009. Google's success is punctuated by the fact that the word "Google" has found its way into the dictionary.
The primary goal of the search engines is to bring relevant search results to their users. When a user types in a search phrase, a search engine is successful when it delivers the information the user is searching for. If a search engine is unable to deliver relevant information it simply won't be long on the digital scene.
Performing this feat is the result of a mix of highly sophisticated programming, incredibly powerful servers, and perhaps some eye of newt and toe of frog thrown in for good measure.
Seriously, however, the full mechanics of how search engines rank web pages are kept highly confidential. It simply has to be that way or the bad guys of the world would use the knowledge to artificially inflate their own rankings.
There are some fundamental truths in SEO and it is fair to say that search engines today consider the following when ranking a given web page:
The content of the page - what it's about, what words are used prominently.
What words are used in the title of the page?
What words are used in the URL of the page?
What words are highlighted on the page?
What internal links (links from other pages on the same site) point to it?
How many external links point to it and more importantly, whether those pages are relevant to the page's subject matter?
The text used to form the internal and external links.
Even the age of the domain name plays a role in its ranking! There is a lot more involved of course and that list could have gone on for a while. Factors such as keywords, the use of images and Flash animations, and the design of the site itself also play a role in a page's ranking.
Good SEO checklists can be found on the web but probably the most important thing to think about doesn't involve search engines at all. That's the quality of the content.
Ultimately a search engine's goal is to return relevant information to its visitors. As such, search engines have become very sophisticated at figuring out whether or not content is relevant to the search term and indeed, whether a human would find it interesting.
SEO is a fascinating subject and the search engines are incredibly complex examples of computer programming. They are so good in fact that the best advice one could give someone looking to increase their placement is - write your content for people and not the search engines. You'll be rewarded for it.

Some ways to improve your website traffic include content and article marketing, in-bound linking, Web 2 strategies, free website directories and search engine optimization. If you do nothing, you will likely get very little traffic.
1. Content and Article Marketing
To get traffic you need top quality content on your website. If you don't, any visitors you do get will click away from your website immediately and move to the next one in the list.
Article marketing can be used quite affectively to drive traffic to your site. Write good quality articles relevant to your website's content and submit them to online directories.
This will help get you noticed and listed in the most popular search engine directories. Remember to stick with quality. Check places known for their stringent approach toward quality such as ezinearticles.com to get an idea of what you should be doing.

2. Creating Links
Start a link campaign. The best way is to get in-bound links commonly known as back-links from similar or complementary website owners. Another way to create links is to make informed comments on blogs and forums that allow you a link to your website address. This is effective and many will click your link simply out of curiosity, especially if you have interesting things to say in your field. But remember, it is not the quantity of external links that is important; it is the quality of them. Keep away from reciprocal linking, it is most often not worth the effort.
3. Web 2.0 Strategies
3. Web 2.0 Strategies
Web 2 strategies, often known as social marketing, have become a huge online marketing tool. YouTube, Flickr, Reddit, Propeller, MySpace, Facebook, Stumbleupon and Digg are all examples of social marketing tools that have come to the forefront in recent times. There are many ways to use these communities to promote yourself and improve website traffic in an ethical manner.
4. Free Website Directories
Promote your website to online newsgroups and free directories. These are important for gaining prominence to some degree. Take care with directories and make sure you're not submitting to a link farm. Search engines don't take kindly to link farms. Make sure the directory offers significant traffic. Google themselves promote Yahoo directory and niche directories as good places to list your site. Yahoo charges a hefty fee but you have to decide how much credence you place in your site.
5. Search Engine Optimization
Make sure your website is optimized so search engines list you. You must be listed for people to ever see your site on a search engine. To optimize your website use keywords in your content, the same keywords in you meta keyword tag, a sensible and relevant meta description, headlines and page titles. Don't cheat! You need to learn a little more about On-page and Off-page optimization. You can Google these terms and find out more in detail later.
No longer do we live in an age where we can expect people to come to us. It is essential to know your target market and tactfully encourage folks to visit. Usually with quality. Remember, that in the end, real people will decide the future of your site so don't be in a rush.

5 Ways to Generate Free Traffic
Quite often the best ways to get traffic to your website are the free ways. You can get some serious amounts of traffic for free or very little cost. The real power in generating your own traffic is in the fact that you are in complete control of it quite often allowing you to choose more accurately who to target therefore generating higher conversion rates. People quite often overlook these methods and there are some real gems. Below I will outline the 5 best ways to get traffic to your website for FREE:-
1. People are spending more time watching video's online than doing anything else online. Video marketing is huge it's not all about YouTube although obviously YouTube by itself is massive but there are also loads of site that you can upload your videos to including Google, Myspace, Yahoo, MSN and AOL. It is not that hard to do and you can download some screen capture software for free. Although if you wish to get serious about Video marketing then some investment in software will improve the look and feel of your videos.
2. Searh Engine Optimisation (SEO)' I know its obvious but it's probably the best way of getting more traffic for your website. The three most important things to consider are:-
2.1. Choice of keywords - Most people choose keywords that there is too much competition for and do not give themselves a chance of getting to the top of the rankings.
2.2. Content - You need to have loads of relevant content that you update frequently to make sure that the search engines see your site as a current one.
2.3. Links - Not the quantity but the quality. You need one way links that are relevant and from other sites with high rankings for similar keywords. The best way to look at SEO is to try and look at it from the search engines point of view. When somebody does a search they want the best results to be displayed (if a load of irrelevant sites with no real content ie spam sites are listed then its not a very good search engine)
3. Articles and Press Releases just like the one that you are reading here are great for generating free traffic for several reasons:-
3.1. You will get high quality one way links from the article directories that you submit to right back to your site. So they are great for SEO. Imaging if you write 2 articles per week and get them published on 10 sites you will be adding roughly 80 high quality one way links to your site per month or just under a 1,000 in a year.
3.2. If you do some keyword research then your articles will very likely get good rankings in the search engines and be found that way.
3.3. People just browsing the article directories find your article and read it.
3.4. The best thing that can happen is an Ezine or magazine can choose to publish your article including the resource box with the link back to your website in it. Some magazines and Ezines have hugh readerships and your article can go out to the whole list generating massive traffic for FREE.
4. Harnessing the power of web2.0. Write a review or a short description about a page on your website that you wish to promote and then submit the review to the social sites. There are loads of the including, Digg, Furl, Stumble Upon, Reddit and Propeller to name a few. Using this method you again generate those one way links from high ranking sites so its great for SEO and people can find the link when browsing these social sites and click through on the link to have a look for themselves. The more interesting and intriguing your review is the more people will click through on your Link.
5. These are excellent ways to tap into highly targeted groups of people. You can also learn so much from other people in these groups or forums. Just go out and find a group or forum and start participating in the conversations and answering questions. You will have a signature file attached to each post that you make and this is where you have your link back to your site. Again building those one-way links and if you write a good signature file that is interesting people will click on those links. With this type of marketing it is best only to give responses if you know the Answer rather than just to get your link up there. It is easy to loose credibility and be seen as a spammer if you are not careful.
The most important thing to do now you have some knowledge is to Take Action without it you will not get any Free Traffic. It's best to focus on one way of getting traffic and get good at that before moving on to the next. So good luck and above all enjoy what you are doing.
